Tamsala Basenjis

Where health testing and excellent temperament are of equal importance.

WHAT'S BEHIND TAMSALA?

Firstly - my idea of what a Basenji should look like - is  strongly influenced by the photo of a dog I have never seen in the flesh.

But to me, he epitomises everything that is Basenji.

The look, the stance, the proportions and ratio of length of leg, to length of back.

He has strength and substance, but with elegance, and most definitely looks like he could do a day's hunting.

About the only thing I would change on him, for perfection, would be to shorten his muzzle.

His name is :

ENGLISH CHAMPION LOGRAK LUBILASH OF LITTLEBREACH

Now - all I have to do is breed one like him!!!

WHAT'S BEHIND TAMSALA.

ATALANTE OF KARNAK (Imp NZ)

(Anubis of Karnak X NZ Ch Kipa of Karnak)

Our foundation bitch.

Although a little longer than she was tall, Lucy moved like a dream.

Her coat was a brilliant flame orange, and she had iridescent clear whites.

She was from a tightly bred combination of "Of The Congo" lines with a strong back-massing of Iago and Marietta of Littlebreach - 2 English imports to New Zealand.

After watching a black/white dog win Best Exhibit at the BCOV Championship Show, we decided that he had the movement we were looking for.

His name?

CH. PUKKANUT NOCTURNE

(Ch Afrika Little Tiger X Ch Pukkanut Tallawong)

On researching his pedigree, we found that his dam Tallawong was from the Hunts' 2 Horsley imports (Horsley Sir Frasertar and Ch Sirclarencia of Horsley).

The Littlebreach/Houndsmark lines behind Fraser strengthened that behind Lucy - and the Tamsala "type" was born in the form of :

CH TAMSALA KUDOS KULINDI (Shula)

Shula gave Tamsala the angulation, the movement, the crested neck and the hooded ears, the general "Littlebreach" type, and unfortunately in some cases, a thicker, denser  coat.

After writing to many USA breeders, we chose "The Woz" line as our original outcross.

From the photos we had seen, the Woz type had remained constant since Cecelia Wozniak's early years
- and most importantly for that time (1974) she health-tested.

After 2 years waiting our first American import came to us via England

- where he won 2 English CC's

and BOB/BIS at the BOBA Championship Show.

He was:

CH  &  AMER. CH TOUCH-O-CLASS OF WOZ (Imp USA)
(Caddi)

(Ch Khani's Tuff Stuff X Ch Jolain Flower Child of Woz)

Caddi sired 10 champions that we know of - in America, England, and Australia.

Caddi mated to Shula cemented in our foundation type
- a chest and sternum bone, well-angulated shoulders/humerus, and the movement that the breed was losing.

Audrey kept

RUBIS CH TAMSALA THE BLUE KONDOR  (Dorsey)

I kept her litter brother

BISS CH TAMSALA BLUE SANCERRE  (Sin)

During 1979 Audrey and I went to America both to visit breeders from coast to coast - and to see what appealed to us for a future direction to continue in.

After meeting, and liking many of Margaret Robertson's Merlea Basenjis we tried to buy a very appealing tricolour bitch.

Unfortunately, we could not persuade her to part with her.

The other breeder who really impressed us with her Basenjis - and especially their movement and soundness -

was Damara Bolte

and her Reveille Basenjis.

Whilst there, Damara showed us a film of Amer Ch Reveille Re-Up and his movement, when in his prime.

This film should be made required viewing for many of today's breeders - so they can recognise correct Basenji movement.

On arrival back in Australia, we decided to incorporate a strongly bred Drumadoon Dark Dainty(Imp UK/Canada) bloodline - to help improve coats and heads.

Dark Dainty was bred on the Merlea lines that we had seen in Canada.

We used

CH KAMPALA SHEMAL

(Kampala Makutu X Ch Makala Egyptian Ibis)

for what was to be Dorsey's only Australian litter.

Audrey kept

BISS CH TAMSALA SILKN SAFFRON

I kept her litter brother

BISS CH TAMSALA SILKN SAGE

After this litter, Dorsey flew to America to Damara Bolte - both to be shown -

and to be bred to her

Amer Ch Reveille Do Be Sirius
( a Re-Up son)
- so a dog pup could be sent back to us.

Dorsey won her American Championship
- culminating with Winners Bitch at the prestigious Westminster Show.

From here on , Audrey and I more or less went in different directions with our breeding.

Audrey used Ch Azenda Dream Maker (Imp UK), Ch Benamon the Master, Azande Riana Rascal, as well as Caddi
and his son
 BISS Ch Tamsala Blue Sancerre.

My "branch" of the Tamsala tree was interwoven through Caddi and our following imports :

REVEILLE RED WHITE AND BLUE (Imp USA)
(Flag)

(Amer Ch Reveille Do Be Sirius X Amer/Aust Ch "Dorsey")

Flag was a reluctant stud dog, possibly a legacy of arriving in English quarantine at only 3 months old?

We only got 2 matings from him - the most influential offspring being my beautiful moving clown

TAMSALA FAMOUS AMOS

(Flag X Tamsala Rhapsody Nblue)

Unfortunately  Amos never finished his title - due to a severe shoulder injury, which left him with a limp.

TRU BLU OF WOZ(Imp USA)
(Angie)

(Amer Ch Falisha's Star Wars of Woz X Amer Ch Chrismar's Black Chantilly)

Angie was a tiny 14 inches tall, but had the best shaped eyes, superb feet, and beautiful shoulders that I have seen in a Basenji.

She only had one litter, as she developed  severe underactive thyroid and was sterile after her litter

- but 2 of that litter were to become the most influential dog and bitch in my bloodline!

They were

RUBISS CH TAMSALA JAZZ RHYTHM (Fred)

(sire of 4 Australian Champions)

and

TAMSALA RHAPSODY NBLUE (Molly)

(dam of 6 Champions in Australia and New Zealand)

Fred and Molly  were sired by CH TAMSALA SILKN SAGE

Also in Angie's only litter was

NZ. CH TAMSALA  RHYTHM NBLUES
(Daisy)

AMER & AUST CH PRINCE CHARMING OF WOZ (Imp USA)
(Prince)

(Wallens Wild Fire of Woz X Wallens Wild Thing of Woz)

(sire of 1 Australian and 1 South African Champion)

Prince was "show dog" personified.

He was very tall (at 19 inches), but carried himself so well that his height was not obvious.

He won well both at Specialties and All breeds level, but didn't breed on as well as I had hoped he would.

THREE WISHES OF WOZ (Imp USA)
(Jeanie)

(Amer Ch Smooth Operator of Woz X Jocasta Jet Rubikhan of Woz)

Jeanie proved to be a much better breeding proposition - her best matings were
to
:

CH TAMSALA JAZZ RHYTHM

BIS, RUBISS CH TAMSALA CALIFORNIA GOLD
(Shannon)
BIS CH TAMSALA SHENANDOA SHADE (Bud)

to:

RUBIS CH TAMSALA HIMSELF(AI) (Thomas)

AMER CH TAMSALA  WISH ME LUCK (Lucky)

and although not a champion ,

one of my most valuable brood bitches

TAMSALA MAKE A WISH
(Misty)

Prince and Jeanie came out from English quarantine in such appalling condition both mentally and physically,
that I decided not to import again until a shorter, different route was found that did not distress the dogs as badly.

Consequently in 1992,
I imported frozen semen from Joanne Fimlaid's litter brothers:

AMER.CH JAMILA'S JAMADARI  (JJ)

and

AMER.CH JAMILA'S MADAHIRO RE (Hiro)

(Amer Ch Jamila's Azizi Re X Amer Ch Arabrac's Mountain Magic)

The most influential offspring from these 2 dogs for my line were:

RUBIS CH TAMSALA HIMSELF (AI)
(Thomas)

(sired by JJ from Tamsala Rhapsody Nblue)

and

CH TAMSALA SNOW CRYSTAL (AI)
(Crystal)

(sired by Hiro from Tamsala Polly Perkins)
